As the clock turned to 8-30 am this morning the gates opened at Magiscroft to welcome the competitors for Ayrstrike rounds 11 and 12. Today would see another two anglers qualify for the final at Springwater on Sunday 25th may 2008. As the entrants assembled there were 22 due to fish so the sections were split with one section on the Cafe Bank and one on the far bank of the Main Loch. Out of the numbers who turned up there were 3 already through to the great day at the end of May, namely Stewart , Kevin and myself.
The draw took place with pegs on either bank all in the hat together. When the draw was complete the Cafe Bank had two qualifiers Kevin and myself and the far bank had one in Stewart. At least the qualifiers were split 2 and 1 rather than 3 on the one bank. The rain promised for today didn't materialise and appart from being cold in the morning the tepreatures rose in the afternoon. Whilst setting up the waters were flat calm prior to a mild breeze from the East which didn't trouble anyone that much.
Woody who failed to draw an end peg was beaten to it by myself, he drew next to me on Peg 9. His first remark to myself when he arrived on the bank was that he would give me 40 quid to go fish the Island Pond. Being an angler for whom money talks I declined that offer as I thought from the end peg I could drive home a mental advantage in preparation for the final. The only mental issue was that I should have taken the money and ran to The Island. ( It was only patter ).
Right from the off there were persons puting in great efforts to qualify. The end pegs on the Cafe bank were drawn by Chris Hughes (Tree end ) and myself ( Island end ) On the far bank William Stewart ( Island end ) and Colin Hart ( Birches end ). Today I decided to cup in some ground bait and by the time I had done so Colin Hart was already netting his first silver fish of the day. On the Cafe Bank Woody was not far behind Colin. As the first hour passed it looked from my viewpoint that Colin Hart was the front runner on the far bank and that the Cafe bank was between Woody and Darren Ferguson, the talk was that Darren had caught a run of skimmers early on.
As afternoon arrived it was obvious that the Carp were not coming out to play and it would be a silver fish match. Woody was living up to his Silver fish board name catching fish after fish in the first two hours. By 2pm he rekoned he had 8 lbs and having watched everyone of them netted I couldn't disagree. Colin Hart was by far the buisiest angler on the far bank throughout the match. My two fellow Ayrstrike Final Smug Club members having gave it their best lifted their foot of the accelerator with Stewart heading for a cup of tea and Kevin his afternoon on the job nap. Stewart wasn't the only person drinking tea.
As the all out came it was obvious who had won each section. Woody didn't think so and had that uneasy look on his face as the weigh in on the farbank started. William stewart was first to weigh in on the farbank and held his lead right along until Jim Hillhouse weighed in a nice sized Carp to overtake Williams weight. As 'Two Nets' lifted his keepnet from the water it was all over bar the shouting and Colin was into the Final.
The weigh in on the Cafe Bank started with Chris Hughes who was quickly upstaged by Darren Ferguson. When we asked Darren to pose for a photograph with his fish he said no point as Woody had outfished him on the day. That still didn't take the worried look of Woody's face. A few nets later Woodys catch weighed in at 13lbs 2 oz qualifying him to the final with the biggest weight so far.
As the sun shined on the Main loch it was two pleased anglers who made their way up to the Cafe to be presented with their much sought after prize and some money which was secondary as their goal was a place in that final.
Well done Woody and Colin.
