Daiwa Winter Junior Series - Top Pond -
Sat 15 November
The series ended with a super match on the top pond seeing hundreds of carp caught, mainly the newly stocked commons. Mark Lyons fished another great match for a clear win with an excellent 3.970kg catch of carp on the pole in only three hours. That performance won him the overall series and a superb 13 metre Vertice pole courtesy of DAIWA. Tony Lamb was second on the day with 2.380kg. Second overall in the series, and winner of a 13ft rod, was Jamie McKay after his 2.380kg took second place in group 2 and enabled him to pip Tony into 3rd overall. Thanks to DAIWA and the other sponsors of this very successful series, a sign of great things to come next year. More pictures to follow soon.

DAIWA Junior Series - Top Pond - Saturday 1 November
A disasterous morning and none of the juniors caught any fish at all! A few fish were agonisingly hooked and lost but apart from that it was very disappointing. The series tables have not changed then!

'Pleasure Buffet' Open - Thursday 30 October 2003
History was made on the Top Pond and the first ever winner of a Scottish floodlit coarse fishing match is Dougie Wallace. Paul Vernel had the same number of fish but Dougie's 7 carp were bigger. Though the night was very cold the atmosphere was warm and all enjoyed the banter not to mention Frieda's cooking before, during and after. Hot soup at their pegs kept fingers from freezing over! Glasgow Angling Centre - Pro-Logic Autumn Series With a bitter frost certain to affect the fishing, organiser Tony Ball spread the match over all three waters. The Island pond fished badly but there were some decent catches under the circumstances on the Top Pond and Main Loch. George won comfortably with a great catch of carp from the top pond on maggot and pinkie. Karl deserved the 'man of the match' award for a nice catch of skimmers on the slider on the main loch. With only two matches out of five gone, Karl leads with two section wins. Series Details. 1st George Glen 9lb 11oz

Glasgow Angling Centre - Pro-Logic Autumn Series The series got off to a patchy start on an out of sorts main loch with fishing a struggle for most. Bryan Hewitt continued his good form in recent matches. When he drew peg 3 he knew just what to do and won clearly with a nice net of mainly skimmer bream on the long pole. Sean McGurgan took the right option and fished the feeder to win the far bank section easily with 4lb 12oz of mainly roach. With 24 entrants, there is still along way (4 matches) to go, so it's all still to play for - Series Details. 1st Bryan Hewitt 8lb 12oz |

Monday Night Open - Monday 28 July - Island Pond Gus Brindle has just moved to Scotland with the Army and enjoyed his first visit to Magiscroft while winning the match with a great catch of mainly F1 Carp. He took most of the fish on pellet near the island on peg 25. Darren included a number of good sized Roach/Rudd hybrids in his excellent catch of mainly silver fish for second. With one match to go Ian Whitson cannot be caught in the points series. 1st Gus Brindle 17lb 6oz

Open Sweep - Sunday 27 July - Main Loch A great catch of bream to nearly 3lb on peg 38 gave in-form Gary his second Sunday win in a row. He fished very positively with groundbait and the fish certainly responded taking mainly maggot on the hook with worm producing later. Stef fished a good match in the corner on peg 50 to edge out Rab, both had nice catches of mainly small fish. 1st Gary McKay 18lb 12oz

Monday Night Open - Monday 7 July - Top Pond A change to the top pond was voted a great success and there were super catches all round. George targetted carp only and took very few orfe in his winning weight. He constantly fed micro pellets in a pole cup to attract the carp and took most fish on maggot. Ian's catch included more fish but more small orfe. The points series is getting closer still but Ian still leads. 1st George Glen 13lb 11oz

Monklands Club Match - Sunday 6 July - Island Pond Ian Whitson took an exceptional catch of carp on a very poor day on the Island pond when everyone else struggled. Chopped worm was the key, with the fish taking the bait on the drop near the bottom. 1st Ian Whitson 5kg 550g |

Monday Night Open - Monday 30 June - Island Pond A change of wind direction to North East affected the fishing at the weekend and also put off the Ide on Monday Night. Alex has had some success with carp recently so this match was right up his street and the picture shows one of the better carp in his winning catch. Darren is fishing well at the moment and some late carp boosted him into second place. The points series is getting closer but Ian Whitson still leads. 1st Alex Napier 7lb 4oz

SFCA Scottish League (2) - Sunday 29 June - Main Loch Darren is in good form at Magiscroft at the moment and he showed a top field the way to catch lots of skimmers with a nice 3.950 kg catch (8lb 11oz). Brian Lynn is doing well on the main loch too and it was no surprise he took second with a similar catch of mainly skimmers. 1st Darren Ferguson 3.950 kg Teams - 1st Monklands Freedom, 2nd Monklands Wasps |

Monday Night Open - Monday 23 June - Island Pond Colin Hart has scored points in the last 6 Monday evening matches and had his second win of the series with an impressive 9lb 9oz of Ide. Smaller Blue Orfe hug the far bank so Colin came slightly away from there to catch better Ide. Ask what he feeds and Colin will say 'Caster, Caster & Caster !', the most successful bait on the island pond at the moment. Well done to Ross for his first result since taking the sport up again with a nice 7lb of Ide. Colin is catching Ian in the points series 1st Colin Hart 9lb 9oz

Friendly Sweep - Sunday 22 June - Island Pond Ian Whitson continued his good form on the Island Pond with a nice catch of mainly Ide to win the latest Sunday Sweep with 4.530 kg. Frequent feeding with caster and maggot and a light pole float fished close to the far bank is Ian's forte and he's hard to beat at the moment. Alex Napier in contrast fished for carp and nearly did enough with 4.330kg for second place. More carp to over 3lb are starting to show more now so matches should see more mixed catches as the summer progresses and carp could take over as the main target.

Monday Night Open - Monday 16 June - Island Pond Ide continue to overshadow the carp in matches on the Island pond. With so many big Ide being caught now (see the Sunday match below too) the latest Monday night match turned into a speed fishing contest with Ide hugging the far bank. George made the most of end peg 2 for 13lb 2oz and included generally bigger Ide than Ian who did have couple of carp. Plenty of loose fed caster with maggot or caster on the hook is the winning method at the moment. Ian still has a good lead in the points series but Colin, George and Darren are still working hard to catch up. 1st George Glen 13lb 3oz

|
Friendly Sweep - Sunday 15 June - Island Pond Well done to Davie McAuley who equalled the Magiscroft match record with an amazing 25lb 14oz almost entirely made up of Ide on peg 24 in a small sweep this Sunday. Lots of loose feed tight to the far bank and maggot and caster fished shallow was the perfect method and was also used to good effect by Ian Whitson who took second with 16lb.

Monday Night Open - Monday 9 June - Island Pond 1st Colin Hart 7lb 15oz Colin and George were separated by only 2 ounces this time (instead of 6 oz!) with the verdict going to Colin in another exciting photo finish on the island pond. One other fish could have swung it for Bobby or George, but Colin kept up his recent form to win with a nice catch of mainly Ide. Though the carp are still playing hard to get, the Ide are really keeping the matches busy and a number of them are weighing up to 10oz now. Ian is still well clear in the points series after framing again, but Colin and George are catching up slightly after the last two weeks.

Junior Competition - Saturday 7 June - Top Pond 1st Calum Bisset 5lb 8oz Well done Calum - the best weight in so far in our popular Junior series.

Monday Night Open - Monday 2 June - Island Pond
1st George Glen 10lb 12oz
2nd Colin Hart 10lb 6oz
3rd Ian Whitson 8lb 13oz
4th Tony Ball 7lb 10oz
5th Drew McCluskey 3lb 12oz
Better weights this week with George and Colin contesting a close match with mainly carp on pegs 9 and 10. The warmer weather saw more fish in the shallower pegs which was good for Ian and Tony too on 20 and 18, but they had less carp. Colin has pegged Ian back a little but Ian has is still well in front in the points series.

Darren fished very well to hold off Ian in an interesting match where silver fish continued to overshadow the carp. Ian has gone further in front in the points series.

Monday Night Open - Monday 19 May - Island Pond 1st Bobby Marshall 7lb 11oz Bobby just pipped on form Ian in a peg to peg battle with Bobby on 2 and Ian on 3. Another cool rainy evening saw good mixed catches all round of Ide, Perch Orfe and Roach with only a few Carp. Lower weights than last match but with less carp showing it was more even and 4lb 12oz still missed out on the points. Ian extended his early lead in the points series.

Monday Night Open - Monday 12 May - Island Pond 1st Ian Whitson 9lb 14oz Ian Whitson fished a great match on peg 24 to keep catching from start to finish, good sized Ide to begin and a late burst of Carp. Drew was close on the other side of the pond and included a higher proportion of Carp. Conditions were difficult with cool driving rain and blustery wind, but with hindsight a good match where 5lb 12oz could not even make the points. Ian takes an early lead in the points series.
|
Junior Competition - Saturday 10 May - Top Pond 1st Mark Lyons 1lb 9oz A pretty hard match for the 11 junior who braved the early start and very cold conditions. Parents spent more time in the cafe sheltering but the kids stuck it out and showed real fighting spirit though the fishing was unusually difficult. Congratulations to Mark who fished very well ... and fingers crossed for a lovely day next time!

Monday Night Open - Monday 5 May - Island Pond
1st Derek Brady 9lb 6oz
2nd Saverio Petri 5lb 6 1/2oz
3rd Ian Whitson 4lb 5oz
4th Ronnie MacLeod 3lb 12oz
5th George Glen 3lb 6 1/2 oz
A difficult match on another cold miserable night more like a wet and windy Winter League match. Derek's winning weight was excellent though in the conditions. Three bigger carp boosted his catch and earned him his first ever match win. Saverio had another nice catch for 2nd without such bonus 'lumps'. No one is running away with the points series at this early stage though Scott Lawrence is in 1st place.
Monday Night Open - Monday 28 April - Island Pond
1st Scott Lawrence 13lb 13oz
2nd Darren Ferguson 11lb 3oz
3rd Willie Jolly 9lb 3oz
4th Colin McKerrell 7lb 3oz
5th Chris Paton 6lb 13oz
On a cool, rainy evening carp were playing hard to get so most of the 16 anglers chose to target lots of ide, orfe and perch in a good competitive match. Scott and Darren made the most of their carp however and it paid off with double figure weights taken on corn, pellet and maggot. Jolly was close behind with a great weight of smaller fish, mainly perch, taken close in.

Match - Sunday 27 April - Top Pond
The recently renamed Edinburgh & Lothians Coarse Angling Club (formerly South Queensferry) held its first match of the season at Magiscroft on Sunday 27th April. The match was on the top pond in windy conditions, preventing all but the most protected from using the pole. Geoff Lowe took first place with 5lb2oz of mainly carp. Mike Burton was second on 4lb2oz and third was Brian Benton with 3lb14oz. The club's only junior, Daniel White, had the biggest fish - a 12oz carp. Anyone interested in joining the club can get contact details from their website - www.sqcac.com

Junior Competition - Saturday 26 April - Top Pond 1st David Lee 2lb 12oz A great start to the Junior Saturday Competitions with 14 enthusiastic youngsters taking part (with lots of relatives caught up in the fun too). A special prize is awarded to the first one to catch a fish. In the first few minutes many fish were hooked and lost in a frantic race but Christopher stayed cool and swung in the first small carp. After the exciting start the kids enjoyed lots of bites and quite a few carp and orfe. David fished well to run out the winner ahead of Jamie. The match was competitive but we are sure everyone had fun and learned from the experience. Roll on next time.

Monday Night Open - Monday 21 April - Island Pond
As expected, the cold wind and rain put most of the Carp off but there were plenty of other fish to be caught. Ian's weight consisted of a lot of Ide for an excellent result under the conditions. The rest of the match was fair and tight too. Scott Lawrence picked out 6 bonus carp to pip Barry Morgan.
1st Ian Whitson - 4lb 15oz
2nd Scott Lawrence - 4lb 10oz
3rd Barry Morgan - 4lb 7oz
Open Sweep - Sunday 20 April - Main Loch
Though a cold east wind put an end to recent good catches, the match was fair and even. Darren lost a few bream due to the high winds but one big skimmer helped him to victory. Barry included a number of small carp in his busy catch.
1st Darren Ferguson - 3lb 10oz
2nd Barry Morgan - 3lb 5oz
3rd Stephen McCaveny - 2lb 7oz
Open Sweep - Sunday 13 April - Main Loch
Ide made the majority of the catches in the latest match with Barry taking a lot of small fish for a comfortable win. Davie took second again just edging out Rab and Jolly.
1st Barry Morgan - 5lb 4oz
2nd Davie Corcoran - 3lb 8oz
3rd = Rab Crossan - 3lb 7oz
3rd = Willie Jolly - 3lb 7oz
Tony's Sweep - Sunday 6 April - Island Pond
The east wind took the carp to the cafe end of the Island Pond and George & Davie made the most of their advantage. George had around 40 carp to 2.5lb for a new Magiscroft record catch. He hooked the majority close to the far bank on peg 3 with a single grain of sweetcorn on a size 18 hook.
1st George Glen - 25lb 14oz
2nd Davie Corcoran - 14lb 7oz
3rd Rab Crossan - 5lb 3oz
Open Sweep - Sunday 30 March - Main Loch
Pegged in front of the cafe, the match was a struggle maybe due to current water clarity. One Roach/Rudd hybrid made most of Bobby Marshall's winning weight, only one ounce ahead of Bryan's hard working small fish catch.
1st Bobby Marshall - 1lb 10oz
2nd Bryan Hewitt - 1lb 9oz
3rd Willie Jolly - 10oz
Tony's Sweep - Sunday 23 March - Main Loch
A very slow start after a hard overnight frost was relieved by a few bream for some. Bream catches beat small fish, and George Glen had 4 up to 2lb and a big roach on worm and red maggot from peg 23 to win comfortably over Graham's smaller skimmers.
1st George Glen - 6lb 3oz
2nd Graham Thompson - 3lb 8oz
3rd Davie Corcoran - 2lb 12oz
Monklands Club - Sunday 16 March - Main Loch
Brian Lynn made the most of his end-peg (peg 49) to take skimmer bream, roach and ide all through the match for a busy 8lb 3oz winning catch. Davie Corcoran at the next peg didn't have as many fish but took 3 bigger skimmers in his 6lb 6 1/2oz.
1st Brian Lynn - 8lb 3oz
2nd Davie Corcoran - 6lb 6 1/2oz
3rd George Glen - 3lb 14oz
Tony's Sweep - Sunday 16 March - Island Pond
Though sport was poor on the right and side, the left hand side of the pond fished reasonably well. Young Scott took the honours with a great performance including some nice carp to edge Tony into 2nd place.
1st Scott McGhee - 5lb 12oz
2nd Tony Ball - 5lb 2oz
3rd John Callaghan - 4lb 2oz
Strong winds and rain made for a miserable day and the carp switched off after a promising start. George picked up some good sized carp in the last hour including one near 2lb, while Willie could only watch having taken his carp in the first hour.
1st George Glen - 5lb 11oz
2nd Willie Jolly - 3lb 6oz
3rd Drew McCluskey - 3lb 3oz
Sinclair enjoyed his first match win with a super catch of carp to over 1lb. Gary had to wait a long time for the fish to respond but made the most of it later in the day.
1st Sinclair Yates - 11lb 7oz
2nd Gary McKay - 6lb 7oz
3rd Karl Altdorfer - 3lb

A change of wind direction pushed the top pond carp to the shallow end making the match tough for most. Davie fished very well from a middle draw to just pip Brian and Bobby with a nice net of small carp and two bigger carp.
1st Davie Corcoran - 1.880 kg
2nd Brian Lynn - 1.720 kg
3rd Bobby Marshall - 1.640 kg

We just managed to get rid of the ice in time to allow the match to go ahead. Though shallower pegs were poor there were small carp to be caught elsewhere and Barry took a late burst of fish for a great catch on the day with 25 carp for 2.150kg to just edge out Gary.
1st Barry Morgan - 2.150 kg
2nd Gary McKay - 1.930 kg
3rd Colin McKerrell - 1.080 kg

2nd
Gary McKay

The fishery boat and teams of enthusiastic anglers were needed to break the thick ice on top pond and main loch. Even in freezing water, the fish fed and gave lots of bites. Paul just pipped Karl by one fish, taking all his Carp on bloodworm hookbait.
1st Paul Gould - 1.150 kg
2nd Karl Altdorfer - 1.100 kg

A tough day on the freezing main loch saw Monklands anglers stick it out for the odd perch and roach. Ewan took the spoils with one 10oz Carp.
