Magiscroft was
honoured to host the very first Celtic Cup which is set to
become a popular annual friendly International event. The two day, 7
a side, contest was an interesting match with the 7 different three peg sections
giving rise to very varied tactical battles. Scotland showed great
understanding of the changing nature of the venue and their tactics were clearly
the best enabling them to achieve a clear victory with 34 points to Wales and
Ireland's 25. It's a very long time since Scotland last won an
International. This was very satisfying and shows great promise for the future.
The first day saw good fishing conditions and the fish
responded reasonably even though the Main Loch has been off form with fish
spawning. Scotland got off to a cracking start winning 5 of the 7 sections
gaining 18 out of a maximum 21 points. Ireland are new to the venue,
unlike Wales, and their struggle helped Wales to clear second place only 3
points behind the home country. On the second day Scotland continued their
good form on a harder day, red hot and sunny, with 4 section wins, but Ireland
showed great fighting spirit to come roaring back to tie on the day with
Scotland on 16 points.
Jamie Masson showed his class in his first cap for Scotland
leading the way with 2 section wins along with Scotland's Brian Lynn and Brian
Clark, with Jamie edging 1st individual place on total weight.
Al three teams agreed it was a good competetive match and great
experience for all who took part as well as great preparation for the 6 Nations
in August at Magiscroft. We are sure our visitors appreciated the
hospitality shown by the their Scottish friends, the SFCA and the management and
staff of Magiscroft, as much as we were delighted to act as hosts. Roll on
next year in Ireland !
