magiscroft fishing reports @ 3 april 2004

All waters are fishing well now for pleasure anglers with rising water temperatures reaching 9 degrees on good days. This is encouraging all species to feed especially the carp leading to some brilliant catches on the Island Pond. We will still get the odd cold period over the next few weeks so you still need to take the conditions into account when planning where and how to fish.  Ask Ronnie in the shop and he will give you the latest info and point you in the right direction.

Island Pond

More great pleasure catches recently. Colin Hart had a 'Red Letter' day on Monday with about 60 carp to 2 1/2 lb for a total of over 40lb. Colin caught all the fish on jelly pellets on peg 12 a metre from the far bank. He found out that the fish responded well to quite heavy feeding with pellets. Others are also finding that positive feeding with pellets is most successful and attracts the bigger carp.

A number of anglers are taking bags up to 25lb including Carp and lots of other species. Barry Morgan had a catch like that including the pretty carp in the picture on the left. Sweetcorn is also working well with maggot a good bait if the weather turns colder.

The fish are not hugging the island so much and are more willing to come looking for feed, even quite close in, so anglers are catching on the short pole and close waggler as well as right across.

Top Pond

Fishing well again now and the small common carp are feeding consistently and making up the bulk of catches.  The water is still well coloured people are catching over 50 small carp in a session.  F1 carp are the bigger fish, many around 12oz but some over 1lb.

Pinkies & maggots are still good but pellets and sweetcorn are working well now and picking out the better fish.  Like the Island Pond, the fish are venturing away from the far side and can often be caught quite close in, though be prepared to go right against the island.

Main Loch

As the water gradually warms up, the pole is starting to catch more fish as the fish come closer and up in the water. Feeder and slider tactics still produce consistently well though.  The pegs in front of the cafe down to the tree are still most popular and successful in matches but pleasure anglers are taking good catches all over.

Skimmer bream are showing up much more in catches with the odd bigger bream to over 2lb.  Maggot is still the most successful bait for bream and carp. Be ready for some of the bigger carp to 3lb, most are getting lost at the moment!
