magiscroft fishing reports @ 18 April 2005

Sping is officially here!  With warmer and longer days the fishing is improving on all waters now.  Though the weather can be changeable and affect the sport, some great catches are being taken on the Carp ponds and the Main Loch is showing encouraging signs.  It's still important to judge the conditions before you decide where and how to fish so Check with Ronnie in the shop and he will give you all the latest info and advice.

Island Pond

Fishing has been super recently with great catches of Ide and Carp.  Double figure bags are the norm and catches over 30lb are common.  Tench are feeding strongly and Malky Ward had 4 averaging 4lb in a great catch estimated between 40 and 50lb.

Ralph Farrell also has a big 40lb catch including big Carp and tench to 5lb.  Pellet and Corn are working well for Carp now with individual fish to 5lb.   Gus Brindle broke the Island Pond match record with 38lb 12oz (report here). Chopped Worm is a good bait to pick out the Tench and is also good for Ide.

Good catches of big Ide to over 1lb are still being taken.  Caster is coming into it's own and is catching loads of Ide now.

Top Pond

Warm weather has really switched the Carp on and the pond is 'fishing it's head off'!  Many people are catching a Carp every cast with F1s up to 1lb feeding ravenously.

The biggest fish recently was a 4lb Mirror Carp that Milo and Jamie fought for 15 mins (both of them!) on a light elastic. Pellet is by far the best bait for Carp but Maggot is also good and will catch the Ide and Orfe too.

Main Loch

Because of the deeper water the Main Loch usually takes around 3 weeks longer than the Carp ponds to warm up in the Spring.  This means that we are still in a transition period from Winter to Spring and the fish can be unsettled.  So one day can see great catches like Davie Duncan's 40lb of Carp and Skimmers last week including fish to 3lb, then the next day the fish can seem to switch off completely.  The fish can be to be up and down and difficult to predict.  My late April with better weather things should improve considerably.

Feeder is still catching along with the Slider in deeper water but on wamer days the fish are inclined to rise up in the water and have been caught as shallow as 4ft deep and less.  10 to 12 ft deep has been most consistent recently.  The pole is working well now and should become the best method over the next few weeks.
