magiscroft fishing reports @ 8 October 2005

Autumn has definitely arrived and after a difficult cold and wet spell the fishing has settled down and is now very good with the Main Loch and the Island Pond starring at the moment. With fluctuating temperatures and some cold nights ahead it is best to Check with Ronnie or Gary in the shop for the latest advice on the best places and tactics.

Get it right in the Autumn and it can be a great time for good catches since the fish have their last chance to feed well before the Winter. The fish are also in prime condition and the Carp and Tench especially are fighting harder than ever so you need to be prepared for a battle!

Main Loch

Very interesting fishing now and October should be a great month for pleasure anglers who can expect the fish to 'get their heads down' before the Winter proper arrives. Carp are dominating at the moment and some super catches are being taken of F1s to well over 3lb that are in beautiful condition and feeding freely.

Jim Hillhouse had a great day with a 37lb 12oz net of Carp on Wednesday on peg 11 after Brian Docherty had a similar catch the day before. Jim fished Pellet over fishmeal groundbait at 10 metres. Pellet is the positive bait for Carp but worm is also still working well as Brian found and that is what Simon Murray used to win the latest Sunday Open. Robert Harper landed the biggest fish recently with the big Common Carp (Finny!) at around 9lb and a 5lb Mirror Carp in the same session.

With the water cooling between 8 and 12 ft is often the best depth. This can change from day to day and during each day, but is a good guide at the moment. Slider and feeder have not produced as well as the pole and waggler but will become more important as the weather cools further.

Island Pond

After a poor couple of weeks the Island Pond has come back to form with a bang and is giving good catches again including plenty of Carp. Paul Johnston had 38 Carp on Thursday including a 6lb Ghostie among many fish from 2lb to 3lb. The carp are not responding to pellet at the moment but corn and worm are working well. Tench and Ide are also feeding with the odd Tench over 3lb showing in many catches.

It definitely pays to be more careful with your groundbaiting and feeding at this time of the year compared to the Summer. Take it easy and you have less chance of spoiling the fishing for yourself and can build a bigger catch. When nights are cold then the fishing is likely to be better in the afternoon than the morning and the last hours before dark can be very good.

Top Pond

The fishing has changed since the first cold spell of the Autumn and is still settling down. Like the Island Pond it is important not to feed too much and build up the swim carefully. Ian Whitson has had a great run in the Monday evening opens on the top pond by catching lots of Blue Orfe on worm which has been a very consistent bait. Pellet has been less effective recently and paste baits ( including fishmeal, bread or cheese) have been working well for the Carp.
