Main Loch
October has given some great fishing so far and as expected the
fish have definitely 'got their heads down' before the Winter proper
arrives. Carp continue to dominate and many super catches are being
taken of F1s and commons to well over 3lb that are in beautiful
condition and feeding freely.
Alan Taylor had a lovely
catch of well over 31lb last Sunday on peg 33 on the far bank and 40lb
was taken off the same peg the next day. But
Paul
Joyce heads the list for the best pleasure catch last week with a
superb 67lb 10oz net of carp on Thursday, on peg 28. Big catches are
also being taken on the cafe bank - James
Woodrow and Trevor Bond
had a good day last Sunday, Jim Hillhouse and Gary McKay had big
catches nearing 40lb on Friday and George
Glen won the Sunday Open from peg 18 with 20lb 7oz.
Worm and Pellet are consistently the best baits for the Carp
and with the water temperatures cooling further the fish are
preferring deeper water - between 10 and 15 ft is often the best depth
now. This can change from day to day and during each day, but is a
good guide to start with at the moment. Slider and feeder tactics are
starting to work now and you are now in the nice position of being
able to choose between these methods and the pole. You can usually be
confident of catching whichever way you prefer.
Island Pond
The Island Pond has come back to form and is giving good catches
again including plenty of Carp to over 4lb. Pellet is starting to
catch the Carp again after a spell when they did not respond to it.
Corn and worm are still working well. Tench and Ide are also feeding
with the odd Tench over 3lb showing in many catches. In the deeper
pegs near the cafe there is always plenty of small fish to keep you
busy including Roach, Gudgeon and Orfe. These can be caught close in
but be prepared since the odd big fish can move in and surprise
you!
It definitely pays to be more careful with your groundbaiting and
feeding at this time of the year compared to the Summer. Take it easy
and you have less chance of spoiling the fishing for yourself and can
build a bigger catch. When nights are cold then the fishing is likely
to be better in the afternoon than the morning and the last hours
before dark can be very good.
Top Pond
The fishing has changed since the first cold spells of the Autumn
and is still settling down. Like the Island Pond it is important not
to feed too much and build up the swim carefully. Worm can still be
productive and though pellet has been less effective recently, paste
baits ( including fishmeal, bread or cheese) have been working well
for the Carp.
