Magiscroft Fishing Reports @ 3 March 2007

It's been a mild Winter in general and the fishing has been better than usual as a result. There is still interesting fishing and good catches to be had if you can use the right methods in the right place at the right time.  The key message is to feed very little since if you feed too much it can badly affect your chances at the moment. As always, it's worth a check with Ronnie in the shop for the best advice on where to go and how to fish.

Top Pond

You can usually depend on the Top Pond for a few fish even in the worst weather conditions when other ponds can be difficult.  Still fishing well with Carp around 1lb to 2lb the mainstay and Blue Orfe boosting catches sometimes to nearly 50lb.

Colin Hart showed what can happen on even cold days with his catch to win the New Year Open match. The odd bigger Carp up to 3lb also make an appearance.  Maggot and Pinkie are baits that are working well when conditions are difficult but the Carp will still take paste, corn and pellet.

It definitely pays to be much more careful with your groundbaiting and feeding at this time of the year compared to the Summer. Take it easy and you have less chance of spoiling the fishing for yourself and can build a bigger catch. When nights are cold then the fishing is likely to be better in the afternoon than the morning and the last hours before dark can be very good.

Island Pond

Still fishing well - in the coldest conditions fish can shoal tightly which can lead to big catches such as Bobby Marshall's match record catch of 49lb. On milder days there have been plenty of good catches to over 40lb including Carp to nearly 6lb. Maggot and Pinkie have been good baits that will catch all species but when the Carp are feeding Pellet and Corn are also good.

In the deeper pegs near the cafe there are always plenty of small fish to keep you busy including Roach, Gudgeon and Orfe. These can be caught close in but be prepared since the odd big fish can move in and surprise you!

Main Loch

The Main Loch has undergone major development work but the Cafe Bank is open again now and has been fishing well the last few days.  Carp are showing all along the Cafe Bank in some good catches up to 50lb.
